What are retainers?

Retainers are dental appliances used in orthodontics, the branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the placement and alignment of your jaws and teeth. Dental retainers are generally used after orthodontic treatments to maintain the position of your new smile. Certain retainers are also used to continue the alignment process. How are retainers made?

There are many different types of retainers. Most often made of comfortable plastic and metal, all retainers are custom made based on molds and measurements taken of your smile. Dr. Dennis Sacry, our skilled dentist, will be able to determine what type of retainer you need. After your retainers are made, our caring dental team will also help determine when your retainers need to be worn and for how long. Generally, retainers should be worn at all times, except for when eating or brushing your teeth, during the first couple months after orthodontic treatment. After that period, we will continue to monitor your smile and prescribe the most suitable advice and treatment.
