Sealants

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a preventive dental treatment. Your caring dentist, Dr. Dennis Sacry, may recommend dental sealants to protect your smile from tooth decay and cavities. A dental sealant is a simple coating that is applied to the chewing and biting surface of a tooth to prevent decay and keep the tooth healthy. Dental sealants work in two main ways:

  • The sealant creates a smooth surface on the tooth. The natural tooth surface has pits and grooves that are difficult to keep clean; the smooth surface created by the dental sealant is easier to clean, helping to prevent decay.
  • The dental sealant forms a protective barrier, blocking out food particles and bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Does my child need dental sealants?

Dental sealants are typically recommended for children’s permanent back molars as soon as they erupt, which is usually between 6 and 12 years of age. We may also recommend dental sealants for adult patients whose teeth are prone to decay.

How are dental sealants applied?

The sealant, which is created from a plastic resin, is simply painted onto the surface of the tooth.
